Ok I have a green sunfish currently in a 30g, which I am sure is going to need to be upgraded to a bigger tank. Are there any tank mates it wont kill? I have put large shiners in with it and it kills them within a few hours. I want to keep him and will put him in a bigger tank within a couple months but I really dont want a large one fish tank either. Any ideas?

An adult madtom with cover such as an empty soda can or PVC pipe. Most are more active at night, so they'd avoid direct contact with the green. Large creek chubs are tough, too.

A gren sunfish by himself will do OK in a 30 without outgrowing it. A bullhead would make a nice tankmate too.

Other medium-to-large sunfish (bluegill, redear, longear, warmouth, etc.), rock bass, madtoms, maybe a bullhead. You could also try larger minnows such as creek or river chubs, golden shiners, etc.
