I am in the process of producing and stocking a 300 gallon tank for a display that will be in the main offices of a park service. This is located in Michigan, so all fish that are used need to be native michigan fish. I am looking for any suggestions as to what community type and species would be ideal for this nice large tank.

Some points to consider:
-------------------

1) No chiller on the tank, temp will be ambient air temperature in air conditioned building (~70-75), high fitration

2) Native species I have kept before in other setups: Rainbow Darters, Sand Darters, Mottled Sculpin, Various dace and shiners, Creek chubs, Channel Catfish, Bluegill, Pumpkinseed, Northern Pike

3) Ease of maintenance is a major point of concern

Creative ideas welcome!!

I took on a similar project recently; this thread contains some of the good advice I was given before starting the project. The tank currently contains golden shiners, fathead minnows (expendable), warmouth, and red-spotted sunfish; other sunfish species and madtoms will be added eventually.

You have a few broad choices: a community tank with lots of small minnows, darters, topminnows, and so on; a community tank with sunfish, bullheads, large minnows and other moderate-sized species; or a tank with one or a few big specimen fish. As far as ease of maintenance, I don't know that there would be a great deal of difference. I personally find a tank with two or three big bruisers to be boring; the small or mid-sized communities have more variety and activity, and the fish tend to be prettier as well.

Once you've narrowed your choice to one of the broad categories you can worry more about which species within that category are compatible with one another.

AH yes, but there's that pesky "ease of maintenance" thing.

Hey! - maybe you could get mounted gamefish, put them on sticks, and move them around every few days! That's the ultimate in low-maintenance. No food, no dealing with pesky water parameters - hell, you don't even need any water!! I think I just found a better use for Irate's Tank O' Death!
