I just set up a brand new 125-gallon tank and was wondering if I should put anything in it. It took me several days to fill it because I used our Pur filter which is attached to the kitchen sink....and those things go sloooow. Especially when you have a well without much water pressure.

Question is, should I add salt? Anything else?

This aquarium was set up over the weekend. On Monday, I took the little lady out fishing (OK, she's the one who fishes) and she caught me two really cool (cool cuz they're so small) fish that are in the tank now. So far they seem quite content and are eating what I throw in there. Mostly worms, crickets and such.

Anyway, any advice is appreciated.

What do you have for filtration? It will take a while to be cycled so go slow adding anymore fish. Like I said by PM, I don't use salt but many here do. I'm sure they can give you the low down.

BTW, please tell me you're not a Giants fan. You live in New England for crying out loud! You're not even close to New Yawk! And yes this is relevent to the topic at hand. I have a strict No Advice policy for Giants fans.

I kinda went crazy and bought 2 FX5's. Spent lots of money on media as well.

Any comments on salt and whatever other minerals or whatever are welcome.

Now, on the Eli thing: My wife chose the name, and she insists it has nothing to do with Mr. Manning. But, she is a Giants fan. We are both from Milford origianally which is pretty close to NY.

Thank you very much. It will be our first. I've waited a long time. Been married 18 years and I finally convinced her.

Not sure if it makes a difference, but for anyone who's curious, I have one shiner and one pumpkinseed in there right now. Just a little worried that because I filtered all the water, there might not be enough of anything in the water for the fish to be healthy....

I've had tropicals before but don't have a lot of experience with natives.

Why did you filter the water? You say you have a well, how is your water?

A Pur filter just basically runs the water over some activated charcoal. Chances are you didn't pull enough out of the water to have any problems. I personally keep a little bit of aquarium salt in all of my fresh water tanks, but it probably isn't necessary. Buy a general fresh water test kit and check your pH and hardness. If they are somewhat near the normal ranges of the water systems in your area, then you probably have nothing to worry about.

Well nothing to worry about aside from what else you're going to put in the tank in a month or so when it is fully cycled.

I had to look up FX5 filters but now that I know, I'd say you have ample filtration. If you have another tank running, or have access to another mature tank, I suggest taking some used filter media and adding it to both filters to jump start the cycle. Maybe your live fish shop [LFS] has some used filter media they could pass along.
With such a big tank with good filtration, I think you could get away with maybe a few more fish to get the cycle going. Maybe try to get more shiners to keep company with the one you have.
