AQUARIST POSITION
Dauphin Island Sea Lab is seeking an aquarist for ‘The Estuarium’.
Accepting applications until 5:00pm September 18th 2008.
Title: Aquarist I
Salary Range: $18,000 – 23,000 commensurate with experience
General Job Description: Work involves the collection and husbandry of aquatic and marine specimens, as well as the design, fabrication, maintenance and appearance of the exhibits within the Estuarium at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab.
1. Expected to learn, understand and implement the professional practices of public aquarium husbandry, including environmental requirements, water quality, life support equipment, nutrition, quarantine procedures, disease recognition and treatments, as well as the construction and maintenance of the exhibits.
2. Collect plants and animals from a variety of habitats in the Mobile Bay area, as well as interact with the general public (including children of all ages).
3. Other duties as assigned/required.
Qualifications:
1. 1-3 years experience, preferred but not required, maintaining display aquaria systems, both fresh and salt water.
2. Able to negotiate constricted spaces, heavy displays and lift fifty pounds.
3. Basic mechanical skills and the ability to trouble-shoot problems required.
4. Must perform well under duress typical of positions dealing with living organisms.
5. Work well with staff and supervisors.
6. Ability to plan, organize and implement projects and interact with the general public (including children of all ages) required.
7. Possession of a valid drivers license required and be insurable by DISL.
8. Work on some weekends and holidays may be required.
9. Three names of reference must be submitted with day time contact numbers or email addresses; of which, two must be work related.
Education Requirements: B.S. in biology or related discipline, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Other qualifications that would assist in this job:
1. Strong background in fresh and salt water fauna and flora of Estuarine Ecosystems.
2. Boat handling ability, fishing experience and mechanical skills.
3. SCUBA certification and recent dive experience.

This is a great opportunity. The Estuarium has some really fantastic and educational exhibits.
Plus the people there are really awesome.
