I can drive a little bit, how and where would i target gar? I am an Pike and muskie angler yet never ever came across one. I have been to St.Clair and caught lots of muskie yet no gar, but I am thinking somewhere else? What are some techniqes/places that i can find them, i want them in my pond! Thanks!
In the south, gar are fairly easy to target because 1) they remain in shallow water when it's hot, and 2) they roll on the surface getting oxygen, so you can see them. When I've been out bass fishing, most shallow coves will hold gar. Also, in the spring, usually you'll get hundreds and hundreds of gar stacking up underneath dams.
As for how to catch them, they're mouths are pretty bony. A lot of people down here catch them using "rope lures." If you make a lure out of a nylon rope, they'll get their teeth caught in the rope and you can haul them in that way.
