Thats the only bowfin I have or have had other than the juveniles that we sold in the late spring/early summer.

nice fish, definately a male. Notice the slight green/blue color to the pecs, pelvics, and even a bit on the anal fin. As far as i know females don't get that coloration. It should also develope a light colored ring around the caudal spot. That seems to be another male characteristic.

I always put a black background on my tanks, makes the fishes colors stand out and hides unsightly air tubing and whatnot. Give it a shot, might make just a little something extra nice in your pics of this outstanding bowfin.

Gee... that gravel looks familiar...

I use a black background, too. I used a black marble shelf liner that I taped on. The marbling has an aquatic feel to it.

I will ask what Katie asked. what size tank is that. I am heading to Louisiana in a few days and thinking about bringing one of these guys home. If he is too big of a fish for my tank I will try for some grass pickerel. And no I am not telling how big my tank is LOL.

The tank is either 50 or 55 gallons. I forget which.

It's a 50 gal. He's gonna get moved outside into a larger container this spring. Would be nice to have a female of similar size.

He's pretty aggressive. If I put my finger on the outside of the glass, he'll come up and snap at it. I'm not brave enough now to try cleaning the inside glass by hand any more.
