In the older edition of the Adubon field guide (not that I use that book for much) there is a wierd minnow in the picture of the hornyhead chubs. AMong all of the Redbelly Dace there is a picture of a middow with a red face and blue nose. Does anyone k now what kind of fish that is? Is it a Redbelly Dace that is under wierd lighting so it looks red and blue?

For a near reference this link will take you to a picture that was taking within seconds of the Audubon picture.

That looks like a big old group of S. Redbelly Dace congregated around that breeding pair of Hornyhead Chub. I don't see any other species in that picture.

I have the book and what ever that fish is it is not in the picture that you have the link to. I have wondered myself what that thing is. Maybe a cardinal shiner? It is clearly not a redbelly dace but from the angle it is hard to say much more than that. Maybe some more people who have the book could take it out and take a look at the photo, the fish is in the top center of the photo facing toward the photographer. It's in the photo numbered 112.

Yeah I was quite disappointed when I found that picture online and the fish in question isn't even in it. Although the link picture was taken within seconds of the book picture. THe fish must have swam off frame.

It is a cool looking fish and I have tried looking it up a few times but get no where.

I'm looking at my book right now and honestly it just looks like the pictures is screwed up. The blue isn't part of that small minnow at all. It looks like the fish in the NAS picture in questin is oriented behind the chub so its head is obscured. The Adubon pictures is awfully small but it looks like you can see larger scales on the minnow than the dace. Could it be a bleeding shine? I say this because the picture in the Audoban guide (#183) looks like the substrate is somewhat similar and the SRBD photo was likely from the same stream too.

ashtonmj,

I think you are right that it is a bleeding shiner in the computer link picture the fish is behind the female hornyhead chub and has red fins. In the book the face is red and I think that blue is not actually part of the fish. Either way the pictures of the Dace, Shiner and Hornyhead are all from different photographers.
