
Fast movin' scarlet shiners in one of my tanks

These fish are part of a school of mostly scarlet shiners, Lythrurus fasciolaris, who live in a 20 gal. tank in one of our teaching labs. I collected them as small YOY last February in a local creek, and they've just about grown up. As you can probably tell, they're in motion all the time.

Since they are indoors I hope they will reach breeding age and color soon.

I think they are, with males having distinctly red markings on their fins and heightened body color, and the females becoming rotund. I've never kept them before so I'm excited at the thought of them breeding, maybe even to the point of young surviving and growing out.... Maybe I'll successfully spawn a species that Bob Muller hasn't(!).
