What the heck is this?

these little suckers are extremely common in my creek, i can catch a good amound with just one dip in the bottom with a minnow net.

any ideas?

its about .5" long.

with most of the ones i caught, there was a big one, and it was grasping a much smaller one, less than half the size, on its underside. were they mating or something?

oh yeah, the head's on the left if you couldn't tell.

That's an isopod, a crustacean related closely to your regular old terrestrial woodlouse/pillbug/roley poley.

yeah, thats what it reminded me of, especially because when i handled it, it would tightly curl up.

yeah i've got them outside in the garage in a 4 gallon tub with a bunch of scuds.

i'm not sure how well they're doing, i haven't really checked. maybe i'll feed a couple to my fish tonight, see if they like em.
