The sand is somewhat fine but not too fine. I hauled several hundred pounds of sand from a couple of locations. It was NOT fun but gave me the look I wanted.

The colors of those darters rock! They look very happy. Can we see a full shot of the tank? I'm curious about the plants you have in there.

Thanks for the compliments.

Bart, it is just Vallisneria americana. I plan on getting riverweed and elodia this spring.

There are fish in there. They are just good at hiding.

Savannah darter. That val jungle is from the few plants you gave me . That was last year sometime?

Drew, thanks for posting more pics. BTW, that savahanna darter is sweet. Might have to get one on a daytrip out of myrtle sometime. Where is the intake for the for the fluval? Are those air driven sponge filters or pre filters for the canister? Are the vals close to the current output to save room for more plants or is there another reason?

Yeah, that Val goes nuts. It seems to slow down in the winter for me somewhat, regardless of temp and photoperiod though. You noticed anything similar?

It seems like it is growing out instead of up. I took that pic after I had just trimmed and pulled a few out.

Awesome stuff drew. Your darters are beautiful especially that Savannah darter.
Are you planning on adding any structure?

Are you planning on adding any structure?

I was just talking to arnoldi about that. When I first added the rocks, the fish were able to get under them but either they sunk or the sand moved around and covered them. So I may just get bigger rocks to create more hiding area for the darters and madtoms.

The only structure really found in streams in this area are tires, shopping carts, refrigerators, etc. :smile2: If I find a nice big piece of driftwood, I'd consider putting it in there. For now the sponge filters serve as structure for some of the fish to hide under.

Thanks guys. Yeah, I've actually had this tank running for 2 years now but in the beginning it was just sand. Then sand with some rocks. Got some lights and val. Replaced the 1800gph pump (overheated the tank a lot!) with the maxi-jet and big canister. And that is pretty much where I am at now.

I'll definitely post more pics when I get them. Especially of the elusive madtoms.

Great tank, Drew! Nice fish pictures, too! Sorry to chime in late, but somehow I missed this post as it was posted. Looks great, though!

Thats a great lookin setup Drew, and the darters look fat and happy. Its nice to be able to have a Big tank to work with there is so much more you can do with all that room, Almost make a whole big slice of of creek, pond, or river whatever your mood is, And the plants are great too, ive never been very lucky at that. Also lots of room for bigger fish if you ever decide to do that. Maybe if im extra good this year Santa will bring me one (Yeah Right)
