Later today i plan to try again this time with the lights off in the tank
after the sun has gone down.
i cant seem to get the color to show up true.
the fish (pickerel) turns a very dark shade @ feeding time
some kinda pre hunt change his back arches and its body coils
to form a S shape for the attack.
should i add lighting behind and above me?

Not sure. It might give you some glare from the front of the tank. Give it a shot, though. It can't hurt to try it.
