Tank size: 75g
Temp: 68F
Ammonia: 0
Nitrite: 0
Nitrate: 20
Tankmates: Pumpkinseed, spotted sunfish, two bushynose plecostomus

Just noticed this tonight, I believe he was likely injured by one of the other sunfishes but want a second opinion. Aside from the eye he acts and looks normal. The eye isn't clouded over or anything, besides the bulging it looks normal.

PM Centrarchid. I remember a post about this where he seemed to know a good deal about it, but I can't find the post or remember where it was.

I'm a firm believer in knowing what you're treating. I have no clue what this is to be honest.
I guess if I had extra really expensive antibiotic laying around, I'd toss the fish in a hospital tank and see if it works.
Shotguns aren't good for all applications but they often get the job done

I've started adding Melafix but am cautious to try anything else. The fish is still acting normal but the eye is looking a bit cloudy. Thanks for the help guys.

The same thing happened to my rainbow darter--one of his eyes puffed up and got cloudy. It stayed that way for a few months, then shrank down to its original size, still cloudy. It's been like that ever since. I assume he injured the eye and it got infected, but it hasn't affected him at all, although he can't see out of it.

Popeye can be caused by lots of different things, so the best bet is to keep your water clean and keep an eye on it. Also, Melafix is pretty useless, IMO.

There are several old topics about this problem in bluegill. Search in the Sunfish and Bass forum. The people who seem to know seem to agree that it's caused by a parasite behind the eye.

Thanks for the input everyone, the eye seems to have shrunken back down to normal size, or almost normal size anyway.

Re: Melafix
Amen.

I realize its not the best option but at the time it was my only option. Either way his eye returned to normal some time ago.
