larval lionfish

This little guy was sighted off the NC coast a couple of days ago. I think its the pelagic late-larval stage of the lionfish.

I blew it. Expert at Smithsonian says its a larval goosefish, Lophius americanus. :blush:

about the size of a 50 cent piece I was told. check out the video.

That's a wicked looking critter. I would certainly say it resembles a lion as well. Good news that it isn't though.

I wouldn't have guessed Lionfish, but I dang sure wouldn't have ever guessed Goosefish, either. It looks like a Flying Gurnard to me.

It's really cool, though. They would be huge sellers in the pet trade, which is probably a bad thing.

Yes, considering fishbase indicates that it grows to 4 feet long and lives for 30 years... maybe not the ideal pet

WoW thats a cool lookin unit. Never saw one anywhere, but i would have guessed some kind of lionfish, i bet thats an awesome sight at full grown, and probably a little scary with the size of that mouth even at this stage :)
