Just finished updating material and data under the "Conservation" section of NANFA's Web site:

http://www.nanfa.org...servation.shtml

This includes a thorough overhaul of the agency links section:

http://www.nanfa.org/agencylinks.shtml

As well as a newly updated Excel spreadsheet showing the federal, state and provincial listing status of every "special status" (i.e., endangered, threatened, special concern) freshwater fish taxon in North America:

http://www.nanfa.org...ting_status.xls

I realize that Excel spreadsheets are problematical for some people. If you have the wherewithal to convert this spreadsheet into a more user-friendly (and quickly update-able) online database, please give me a holler.

Also, let me know if you see any errors or if I missed anything.

Thanks muchly,

Chris Scharpf

It looks good for 'bama, at least.

Alabama does not have an endangered species act, but does prohibit the take of several "Protected" fishes.

Exactly, it's a squishy, weak law. Species like the flame chub or stippled studfish should at least be listed as some kind of Special Concern, but that's not the case.

Like all things, some things are better for some than others. If you change the format, it will be disadvantageous to some, while beneficial to others. Those who don't have Microsoft Office can download a free Excel viewer, so this format should not be a problem to anybody. For me, I think the Excel format is the best format that you can have it in, and I therefore cast one vote for NOT converting it to anything else. My only small criticism is, I'd like to see a column with the English names next to the column with the Latin names.

Thanks for the hard work. This should be useful to all here. The previous version accompanied me everywhere on my flash drive, and now the updated version will!

Nice job Chris. That took some time.

I also like excel, it is easy to convert to other forms as needed.

There's always Open Office. It's free and compatible with Excel files. Not just for Linux users any more!
