Job Description

Introduction

The Mill Creek Watershed Council of Communities (MCWCC), a Cincinnati area nonprofit corporation established to coordinate efforts to improve water resources in the Mill Creek, seeks a dynamic Executive Director with documented success in managing nonprofits and leading successful watershed protection and enhancement initiatives in urban settings. Working with staff, the Chair, Board of Trustees, Mill Creek committees, and a broad range of public, private and nonprofit stakeholders, the Executive Director will manage the day-to-day operations of the organization. The Executive Director will focus on MCWCC’s management and growth to ensure effectiveness in achieving its mission and long-term viability.

The MCWCC has centrally located offices off I-75 near Evendale with computer technology and equipment. The MCWCC also employs a Program Director and Administrative Assistant.

Specific Responsibilities

The Executive Director will:

Overall

Be the leader of the organization in interacting with communities, outside organizations, media, developing the tone of the organization, and setting the example of organizational expectations including implementing the highest professional and ethical standards.

Spend approximately 50% of time on program and policy development; 35% of time on administration and management; 15% of time on fundraising

Other duties as directed by the Chair and Board of Trustees

Program and Policy Development

Work with a variety of state agencies, local municipalities, business collaborators and residents to advance MCWCC goals and implement programs to improve the Mill Creek Watershed

Work cooperatively with Board of Trustees and Chair of Board to build and sustain a healthy organization

Work with the Board of Trustees to develop and implement a long term strategic planning process and MCWCC annual work plan

Provide leadership on key issues and policies affecting water resources and related environmental concerns affecting the Mill Creek Watershed

Pursue and prepare public (state and federal) and private foundation grant applications


Management

Responsible for MCWCC’s administrative and financial responsibilities, managing annual budget and existing and future state, federal and private foundation grants; monitor work performed under contracts and grants

Oversee and manage staff and interns; recruit and manage volunteers

Monitor development and production of a quarterly newsletter (email and print)

Plan and facilitate public meetings and Board of Trustees meetings in coordination with Board Chair

Communicate with the Board of Trustees and Board Committees as designated

Coordinate with the Millcreek Valley Conservancy District

Act as the primary spokesperson for MCWCC with media, businesses and residents as well as local, regional, and national governmental organizations and agencies

Fundraising

Work with the Board of Trustees to establish a comprehensive and attainable fundraising strategy

Develop relations with major government and private donors; work with Development Committee and Corporate Sponsorship consultant to develop corporate relations.

Maintain and expand MCWCC’s membership base.

Qualifications

The Mill Creek Watershed Council seeks candidates with experience and knowledge in the following areas:

Nonprofit management experience with documented success in program management, fundraising & membership campaigns, and public outreach events

Success in writing, securing and administering public and private grants; managing contracts for environmental restoration projects

Supervising and contributing to the development of staff

Knowledge and experience in dealing with environmental, legislative and regulatory issues impacting water resources, stormwater management, floodplain management and flooding, stream restoration and habitat improvements in an urban watershed context.

Energizing, coordinating, facilitating and leading interdisciplinary teams of citizens, environmental groups, technical specialists, policy analysts and public officials in identifying and pursuing opportunities for watershed improvement

Developing, implementing and updating work plans, annual reports and other strategic plans

Bachelor’s degree required, in fields such as natural resources, environmental science, urban or land use planning, public relations, public administration, environmental law or watershed management or other related field. An advanced degree is favored but can be substituted with experience.

Other Requirements

MCWCC is seeking an enthusiastic, motivated and experienced individual. A flexible schedule and willingness to occasionally work evenings and weekends is required. The ideal candidate will need to provide travel in his/her own vehicle to meetings in the Greater Cincinnati area. Reasonable travel costs and mileage will be reimbursed.

Start Date: May 2009

Hours: Full Time

Salary: $48,000 to $60,000 Commensurate with qualifications.

Benefits: IRA and Health Care Contributions to be negotiated
