I have to say that this is the best priced dechlorinator out there. I am sold!

This is the only dechlorinator I have used for years. A little but lasts a very long time.

I don't believe it does, only chlorine.

Edit : Been told I'm wrong... it does do chloramine.

Note that the reducing agent, sodium thiosulfate, at a high level will reduce the Cl but then you are left with the amine function in your water.

I realize this is an old thread, but I just came across it and was curious how this product compares to Chloram-X?

I've been using it for awhile and it works great. I'm very happy with it and it's cheap! My kind of product.

It is all I use. But I have to admit that my water has only chlorine. No chloramine.

One thing to be aware of with sodium thiosulphate is that it also reduces the oxygen in the water as well. Just make sure that you have a decent amount of aeration before using the dechlorinated water.

How does it affect the ammonia?

Nothing. As far as I know. When we were in Ohio, I used the Dechlor Crystals alone with no problem. Here in California, apparently the pH is way high or the Chloramine is way high. In any case, after the chlorine is deactivated, the ammonia left over is toxic enough to cause a problem. So now I'm using Ammo-Lock or such to zap the ammonia as well when changing water. I don't know how unique the situation here in California is, but as I say, the amount of ammonia left after using the Dechlor Crystals on our Ohio tap water was not a problem. I did thousands of gallons of water changes there, using Dechlor Crystals only, even at 100% new water, with no ill effects. I was running about 100 tanks at that time.

I've been using just sodium thiosulfate for about 1 1/2 years in two different cities using chloramine in the water supply. I've never actually tested for chlorine, but don't have any fish losses at water changes so I assume it works well!

Any idea of shelf life once you mix it? I've been mixing it one 12oz plastic soda bottle at a time, but that'll last me over a year. Will it lose effectiveness over time?

As for how it compares to product X: way, *way* cheaper. Like maybe 100x cheaper? Good enough for me!

Don't have any specific info, but my feeling is that it will last indefinitely as long as it's in a closed, inert container. To test the the level of chloramine, use the thiosulfate, then do an ammonia test on the treated water/tank. It's the left over ammonia from the chloramine that can be a problem. The thiosulfate is fully effective on the chlorine part of the chloramine.

The key point of the above post was CLOSED. If left open and or over time will decompose to sulfur, water and SO2 gas.
