ID assistance on another forum

this is a link to a topic started on a good tropical forum.. this fish was caught in florida.. I have no idea what it is but one person seems to think its a red terror cichlid. http://www.myfishtan...html#post549903

Yep, Amphiloohus festae, or whatever the current nomenclature for it is. True Red Terror.

I did alot of googling and came up with the same answer but wanted to here from the experts... if you actually read the thread it is on you will see the original poster states these are common in area waterways, perfect example of what we are discussing in the HR669 thread.

I caught a dozen in an hour in Everglades National Park, 2003.

I'm thinking this is a close relative of the fesatae, A. uropthalmus. I got a bunch of these last trip, from Pembroke Pines and Ft. Lauderdale. They're really mean.

looks like a flower horn to me

i'm with Bob: looks like uropthalmus (Mayan), not festae (red terror), based on the caudal peduncle spot (central in urop, higher in festae) and the first 2 bars on front of body (parallel in urop, converging in festae). And besides that, urop has been widely established in S.FL for many years; i dont think there's any feral festae pops yet. or are there?

its for sure a mayan cichlid i catch them here in florida all the time
