Well, I have biked past this stream constantly on my way to either the Hogg River or to Victoria Harbour. Well today I decided to see what exactly is in there (I figured maybe some p-seeds since I had bites there when quickly giving the stream a quick fish from the bridge). So, I switched up from my nymph to a in-line spinner since the wind was wreaking havoc with the light weight of the nymph. I had no bites until I reached a pool, where I ended up catching 2 creek chub on the in-line spinner. Using half a powerbait trout worm, I caught 2 small perch. I ended up bolting from the spot because I thought I had kept hearing thunder (and I seen some darkening clouds), only to realise that I had been hearing the rumble from trucks when the storm never happened  I plan on going back to the stream sometime during the week after school (using live bait to see what else I can catch). During the summer I plan bringing waders and fully exploring this stream, (exploring upstream of the beaver dam) instead of just going downstream from the bridge.

That's a beautiful creek! It'll be neat to see what you pull out of there when you get some waders and get in the stream! Thanks for sharing!

Hmm, those are awfully small scales on that fish to be a river chub... Why did you change your original ID?

i looked at the Ontario Baitfish Primer, and I realised that this fish looked exactly like the river chub in the photo. They also look slightly different than creek chub in color, the ones i catch are colored like a rainbow trout, except its a lot duller usually (i have also never noticed a stripe that prominent on the chubs i catch in hogg creek or the wye river). Here's the reference photo i used (pg.19): http://www.dfo-mpo.g...appats-on_e.pdf

I think what you caught is a creek chub, the pictures may look different but based on the key features marked by the link you posted it appears to be a creek chub.

ok, it was just that i was lookin through and i noticed that it looked a lot like a river chub when i actually compared. I am very interested in looking for what exactly is in the stream, i plan on getting a minnow trap and my fishing licence (to use the trap legally) and see what fish are in the fast part and whats in the slow moving part above the dams. Friday or saturday ill use worms and see what fish species i can catch in there other than creek chub and yellow perch. For the future i plan on dip netting as well (maybe a trap/dipnet combo for a trip), that would probably be most entertaining. I wonder if there would be any small borwn trout or rainbow trout in the quick part of the stream, looks like a place they'd frequent

Yep I would agree that what you caught is a creek chub.

did pt.2 of the sampling today, very happy with results. Discovered p-seeds in the creek, as well as what i think was a blacknose dace (i gut hooked it, plus batteries were dead by then). I also caught some creek chub, including a 9" creek monster that had tubercles and was colored up nicely...unfortunately the batteries died when i went to pic it. Biggest p-seed caught was about 5-6", and the stream down from the pool i fished down to is very deep, 4-6' average, loaded with p-seeds (thats where i hooked the dace), and im sure there would be a bass or two in there in the summer. Ill be def. putting a trap down there later this summer. Pics:

It's a creek chub, you can actually see the dorsal spot, from the photo
