I've been talking to a few folks about setting up a Roanoke Drainage sampling trip for a weekend in late June or July.

The trip will be mostly sampling with limited collecting. The main goal is to photo document some of the lesser seen species. We will also be snorkeling wherever possible.

If you're interested, please say so, so I can start planning.

Ah..my license expires on the 6/12...I thought it was later...looks like I gotta renew. That time of year sounds good.

Matt, we can always do a local trip before then. I want to hit some smaller Potomac tribs on the VA side, the ones we talked about before, if you're interested.

I may be sampled out the first few weeks of June. Scheduled for three weeks of 5 day a week boat and raft shocking all up and down Potomac and tribs. I'll need this trip at the end of the month to get my mind off of that work though...

I'd love to come if the timing works out. May bring two kids, 15 & 7. I have an NC scientific permit if we want to sample south of the border. Lower Roanoke tribs in northeast NC are good for swamp species, and Dan River tribs have many nice piedmont species.
Watch out of course for endangered Roanoke logperch.

Are you guys/girls interested in a 1 or 2 day trip? I was hoping to hit the Roanoke/Staunton River as well as the Dan River but I'm not sure that can be done in 1 day.

Will do. Keep tuned to this thread though.

We've been getting a lot of rain, so I want to make sure the water won't be high and is snorkelable.

I'm interested and probably good for two days. Is the Staunton the stretch between Leesville and Kerr lakes?

Saturday, July 11, 2009 - Staunton River, Virginia

Sunday, July 12, 2009 - Dan River, Virginia + North Carolina

The exact locations have not been determined and may change based on water flow levels at the time.

You will need a Virginia fishing license for either day. We are expecting be covered by a permit on Sunday so no license is necessary. If that changes, we may stick to the VA regions.

Please let me know if you plan on attending and which days. Also let me know where you are coming from so we can choose a path favorable for all.

I like those dates MUCH better than the end of June. That may have made the difference for me. Thanks for the update, I'll let you know what is going on. Just closed on a house so I don't know how much time I can break away for on the weekend, maybe just the day.

EDIT: I may have spoken too soon. That might have to be moving weekend....TBD

Bummer, I'm probably going to be up in Michigan that weekend. Maybe next time!
