Me and 2 friends and my dad decided to go do some collecting in the tangipahoa river today to try out my first seine ( 20'x4'x1/4"). It was a great trip, we found a spot in the river where it split into 2 large channels (about 25-30' wide), and 2 other small creeks, one about 2-3' wide and one about 5-6' wide with a gravel and sand bottom. Our fist try with the seine yeilded one speckled darter, 1 creek chub, tons of pregnant mosquitofish, 1 blackbanded darter, 1 blackspotted topminnow, and one broadstriped topminnow all in the first scoop.
Here is a list of the total species we caught in the 2 hours we were out there.

speckled darter
creek chub
longnose shiner
northern hogsucker
naked sand darter
mosquitofish
blackbanded darter
blackspotted topminnow
common shiner
blacktail shiner
brook silverside-crazy because their range isnt supposed to extend down here.
4" chain pickeral
hybrid sunfish
largemouth bass
pumpkinseed
redline darter

Ill post pics later.

ps to Irate- These dont sound like trash fish to me.

Yeah, that sounds like a good outing. Rather than common shiner you would've found striped shiner, which is very similar and a more southern species. And pumpkinseed sunfish? You may have found a longear or one of the spotted sunfishes, unless someone has recently released pumpkinseeds way far south.

Thanks for the input. Im still a beginner at id'ing fish. And yep your right it is a longear. For years ive thought these little guys were pumpkinseeds until now.

We definantly woulda caught more but we could only stay for 2 hours before the rain came. So yeah someday were gonna bring my tent out and sleep out there for 2 nights or so.

Yeah I love to camp. If you go out collecting for only a few hours it doesnt let you finish all the stuff you wanna do, and camping lets you do all that stuff and still gives you a little bita time to just relax. Wow that tent must be light, but a little over my budget.

Just an update- The blackbanded darters I caught are actually dusky darters. They are doing very well in the tank. :smile2:

My guess is that they are still blackbanded darter, and I'm really curious to see what the "redline darter" is :)

Might you have caught inland silverside?

Good stuff tho, don't take this the wrong way... Just trying to help hone your skills! I (and I'm sure all the others) think its absolutely great you guys are checking into all this. :)

Thanks, dont worry im not takin it the wrong way, im still pretty sure its a dusky darter as it has that wavy pattern above the long black stripe. But the silverside may have been inland but it still had a very narrow body. What do you think? The "redline darter" was found dead on the shore :sad2: as it musta fell out the net on a previous seine pull out so it was still kinda hard to id. I do believe you're probably right about him though. Ill post some pics of the dusky though in the next post, unfortunately I forgot my camera when we went out collecting so the only one I can take pics of is the dusky darter, speckled darter, naked sand darter, hogsucker, blacktail shiners, and the other shiner because they're in my aquarium.

23 ounces! My Kelty is twice as heavy at 3 pounds, and that's one of the lightest double-wall tents available. I do fine with a tarp too, but the hardware store ones are too heavy. I ditched the Coleman stove for an alcohol stove - 6 ounces including fuel (4 oz) for a two day hike. I could go even lighter with an Esbit stove.

For car camping none of this matters - you can go as heavy as you want. It's cheaper that way too.

Im gonna have to get a new tent soon, mine is very heavy and it fits like 7 people. Its gettin agravating having to haul that thing all around (especially when I gotta cross the river) and then setting it up. Once a save some money up, im gonna go on a little shopping spree for some new gear, lighter gear. My dad always said as you get older youre gonna learn to travel light.
