Hi All!
I've been thinking about using a windmill aerator. All the ones I see seem to be set up for BIG ponds, whilest I have several small ones. Anyone with practical advice. Can you use one windmill to aerate several ponds. Is there a rule of thumb as to how many turbines, how tall the tower etc.. etc. Anyone ever make one of their own?

Thanks!

Hmm. Got a pic of one? Or better yet, a drawing??

That's a new one on me.

No, but here's a site that has them for 1/4 acre ponds and larger. Mine isn't that big. I was wondering if scaled down model would work as well.

Mander,

Here in much of the midwest, the windmill aerators are unreliable when needed most on hot, sultry nealry windless days with overcast skies. If your area is is suitable for reliable wind power then a smaller unit might be feasible. Do you have a way to hook wind convertor (mill) to a compressor or blower where air could distributed by pipe to multiple ponds? Also, are you rearing food fish under intensive conditions?

OK, I see, the windmill operates either a diaphragm pump (like a typical aquarium pump) or a bellows. Why not a piston pump or a regenerative blower, I wonder? Anybody remember those?

Hello Mander:

I feel your pain!

For an excellent source of info on aeration of all types, I'd suggest a visit to the Pond Boss Forum which deals with outdoor ponds and raising stocked fish.

I've learned a great deal from the folks that hang out there. Scroll down about 85% of the way to find the Aeration Section of the forum. I hope this direct link to the forum opening page works OK for you.
