Hi everyone,
I was just looking up some info. on the Sand Shiner (Notropis stramineus) and saw that on the Illinois Natural History Survey's website the Sand Shiner is listed as (Notropis ludibundus). Is this new? Or, is the INHS not updated?

Although N. ludibundus (Girard 1856) has priority over N. stramineus (Girard 1865), it has been suppressed to maintain nomenclatural stability; in other words, since so many references were using stramineus, the powers-that-be decided not to unnecessarily tip the nomenclatural apple cart and make everyone switch to the technically correct ludibundus. A few older sources, including the Peterson Field Guide, continue to use ludibundus, which will no doubt change in the next edition.

Yeah, for stuff like this, I use the AFS "approved" list, which Chris uses on the NANFA Species Checklist. It's probably the easiest way to go, because systematics is not something you probably really want to get involved in (even tho you have an interest in it ;) ).
