This shell is from Dunkard Creek, Monogalia County, WV/Greene County, PA

Three ridge, Amblema plicata. Old shell, not much, if anything is living that far up the Monogohela River.

These are still supposedly in there alive.
My dad used to see them in the grass beds around Mt Morris, PA.

From what I've been told, Dunkard Creek and Ten Mile both still have relatively decent unionid species richness compared to the remainder of the Mon drainage.
These are still supposedly in there alive.
My dad used to see them in the grass beds around Mt Morris, PA.

From where were you told...?Anything is better than the middle and lower Mon which are probably devoid of mussels except for a few more tolerant species.

From what I've been told, Dunkard Creek and Ten Mile both still have relatively decent unionid species richness compared to the remainder of the Mon drainage.
I just heard that there was a mussel and fish kill in Dunkard Creek a week or so ago originating near Blacksville, WV. So far, several mussels were killed including Simpsonaias and Epioblasma. Who knows how this will affect the Mon.

Now that more facts are turning up in that story it is becoming quite sad. It will be interesting to see how it unfolds with multiple state and federal agencies involved, several of whom seem quite timid. There seems to be a likely explination that no one wants to point the finger towards. Could be a pivotal point in Marcellus shale operations....

Yeah, someone was telling me how great it was that energy supply was shifting from mountain top removal to this "new sustainable natural gas" process and I about vomited.
