Smallmouth Juvenile?

caught in the herring river in harwich, massachusetts.

i think its a smallmouth bass. am i right

yep. Ive noticed with all small juv. smallies are that if theyre under 4" they'll still have the orange in their tails

Most species of bass have that orange tail when they are little. It seems most visible to me on a spotted bass. That little guy is definitely a smallmouth. The only one that does not have the orange tail is the largemouth bass.

thanks guys...im gettin better at this lol...i didnt know they had a orange tail like that...i caught him and 3 others in a very small stream/river that leads to the ocean.

only smallmouth and largemouth up here lol. Thanks for the correction about orange tails

I guess that is true your choices are limited up there. Here in Ohio we have spotted bass as well and then if you get down in GA and AL you have several more species.

and they look similar to either a largemouth or smallmouth which makes it even better to attempt an ID lol

Young <3" Smallmouth bass also have parr marks which imaged fish exhibits. Spotted bass of the lower Ohio River drainage also have but only transiently.

To complicate, I have seen hatchery reared largemouth bass with orange / red in tail, but either, they have spotted bass in their background or a high pigment diet can be a factor.
