I just recently setup a 29 gallon tank with 1 longear sunfish. The filter that I have is a Tetra Internal Whisper Power Filter 10-30 gallon from walmart. What would cause this foam? I do not have any substrate either in the tank. It looks like the fishes waste has settled on the bottom and the filter is not picking it up. What should I do? Would a water change fix this foam? How much of a water change?

Thanks

Foam is made of phospholipids and proteins that interact with water forming the soap like scum you see. The are most likely leached out of uneaten feed although some can ebe drived from the fish itself. Bacteria (heterotrophic) normaly break these compounds done into carbon dioxide, phosphate and ammonia. Stepping up water changes and backing off on feed applcation rate will reduce foam build up. Some aquarist, especially those working with saltwater, use foam fractionators to remove foam. Same system can also be employed by freshwater culturist.

If my understanding is correct, then you do not have gravel which is where the bulk of the bacteria would reside in most aquaria. Over time bacteria will begin growing more heavily on glass to take advantage of substrate. Take care, same bacteria can become pathogenic if fish stressed.

Are you suggesting that I need gravel or don't need gravel? I just did a 50% water change. I am also considering buying a larger filter (an aquaclear 70). Do I need one of the filters that go on the bottom of the tank?

Stumpy,

My previous reply was under basssmaster. I recommend the upgrade for the hanging external filter. If water changes frequent enough, then water quality will be better without the gravel when feedings are heavy.
