Hey guys, this question pertains to my tropical tank, my 8" Wolf Fish (Hoplias malabaricus), has an open wound on his lower jaw due to being housed with others at the local fish shop. I was wondering what the best way to deal with this is. He is swimming around and feeding just fine, but im worried about infection. Do you think using some Melafix, I have laying around will help or should I just let it heal on its own? Frequent water changes etc... Any info would be appreciated.

I have used Melafix for wounds before with good experiences. It couldn't hurt.

I have found BioBandage by Hakari to work wonders on wounds.....The Large container is pretty expensive...but now they have a one time use container shaped like a fish that is priced right. It will also give you more than a one time use.....Just my two cents..... :)

I also use melafix and primafix and they are very good products

Hmm, never heard of it, ill have to look into it. I gave the first dose of Melafix a few hours ago, we will see how it goes. Although now I have witnessed him darting to the top of the tank and hitting his head pretty hard, im wondering if that is waht is causing the damage. Im not too sure what is freaking him out, he is the only fish in the 55 gallon

I am the "odd man out" in terms of this type of treatment, and prefer to just let good water quality work its magic on the fish...which normally recover on their own. I used to use the old-timer salt method but never found that it worked any better than doing nothing at all.

That fish is a deader... Sorry to bear sad tidings!
