Research Technician: NCSU Vet School is conducting projects focused on the conservation and life history of freshwater mussels. We are seeking to hire one individual as a technician beginning in late summer or early fall 2009 to assist with both field and laboratory work. Duties:

Perform routine care for and maintenance of juvenile and adult freshwater mussels and stream fishes in a laboratory,
Assist in the propagation and culture of freshwater mussels,
Assist in performing field surveys and collection of freshwater mussels (snorkeling and wading)
Make off-site visits to perform maintenance and monitoring work at mussel culture facilities at 2 state hatcheries (Morganton and Marion, NC)
Assist in conducting some fish collection through seining and backpack electrofishing
Monitor and maintain water quality in lab recirculating systems,
Maintain records on fishes and mussels in the laboratory,
Other tasks (e.g. data entry, library research, equipment maintenance) may be required as needed.
Some overnight travel is expected (ranging from approximately 0-5 nights per month).

Necessary Qualifications:
A Bachelor of Science degree (or equivalent) in biology, fisheries and wildlife sciences, zoology or related field
Physically fit and able to work long hours in and around water and under potentially adverse weather conditions,
Must be able to swim, snorkel and be comfortable in water,
Must be able to climb ladders and carry up to 40 pounds,
A North Carolina driver’s license (or ability to obtain one),
Must be able to conduct required overnight travel,
Good organizational skills and attention to detail,
Ability to work well alone as well as work closely with others.

Other Preferred Qualifications:
A background and interest in streams and aquatic biology,
Experience in the care of aquatic animals
Experience surveying freshwater fishes and/or mussels
Experience paddling a canoe
Experience with tools, plumbing, carpentry, etc.

Pay:
Initially, the technician will have temporary status, and pay will be $12/hour. An average of 40 hours per week is expected. Funding is available for 1 year but is subject to renewal on an annual basis.
