Some of you are familiar with Fish Farming News magazine. It is the last nationally published aquaculture magazine left in the USA.

Their editors Rick Martin and Susan Jones have asked that I start a new column for them called FACES,PLACES and GEAR. It will highlight responsible sampling, collecting and research efforts by those wanting to protect and enhance natural (and native) fishes in the US.
The column is going to highlight 1 or 2 specific researchers, agencies, private individuals, universities and /or groups each issue. Unlike the AFS type publications, this column will be written in Joe 6 Pack journalistic style. No Excel spread sheets, no pie charts, no Power Point .....just pictures and a basic story highlighting specific people going about their work (or pleasure) in helping to protect and preserve our wilderness fisheries.

It will NOT be featuring commercial enterprise per se, but rather individuals doing collecting and sampling in their unique way or with their unique gears.

I thought you folks here on the NANFA forum would make for some interesting reads and that is why I asked permission to post this announcement.

The column will be written by me . The photos and basic story line will be taken from information that the subjects supply. There will be a Q&A sidebar on Gear related issues.

FFN will edit and publish every second month.

With that said, I welcome any suggestions for future columns on state, federal, university or private groups (or individuals). Here is a chance to highlight your projects to a national audience.

I thank NANFA reps for letting me post the news for this new environmental fisheries column.

Regards,

Greg

Greg, this sounds very interesting. Any chance you can post the column here as well? Or submit to A/C.

IM,

I am not sure about (syndicating ) the column. That is something NANFA and the publisher of FFN would need to discuss. It seems like a win/win idea for both involved.NANFA or A/C can easily contact the publishers of FFN and talk about some collaboration. I think it would be beneficial to both .

FYI.
There are literally hundreds of grad students, university professors, state and federal workers who are involved in terrific fisheries projects (inland and offshore) that might never get a mention in any public forum. The pretigious magazines that might carry these stories insist on a format that is so UPPER CASE that few of the rank and file folks could even understand the article if they did read it.

Private groups like NANFA have hundreds of people who are involved in the protection and proliferation of native species. Some of these folks have very interesting stories themselves and their "techniques" are just as interesting.
This column will cut to the chase and put these folks' projects in the public eye .By utilizing Joe 6 Pack journalism, the articles are made understandable by anyone with a 7th grade reading skill.....period!

You know, I spent the first 25 years or so of my net design and fabricating career "harvesting" fish. Now I am looking to spend the remaining years designing, fabricating and promoting the the "protection" of the fisheries.

Lets see what kind of response we get and what good things and good people come forward with their ideas for stories or current projects.

Got to go to work. I am by myself today and its going to another hot one.
