Stan Sung sent me some photos from his trip to Alabama in the spring. Here's one that shows a male striped shiner (Luxilus chrysocephalus) in breeding coloration, which is always surprising to see compared to their normal silvery color. Also in the net are two male rainbow shiners (Notropis chrosomus). The creek these fish were from is near Fort Payne, AL.

Nice! The color seems somewhat different from the northern subspecies?

I haven't seen more northerly individuals during breeding season, so I'm not really sure. But it could well be.

Hey! That's from my hometown! Is that from the disgusting ditch in front of K-Mart?

Northern stripes:

I am just mixing them up with common shiner pics

Btw is it just variations or different populations or difference in spawning conditions but some pics of tuberculated stripe shiners show some reds while others don't:

red on snout/mouth and dark teardrop under eye:

no red on snout/mouth and no dark teardrop:

No, I think that ditch is now completely destroyed as a creek. They're from south of there.

Awesome pic! I like the yellow scales in the Striped Shiner. That's so cool!
