Hi all! I have a friend who is looking for some 3 spine sticklebacks for a display at the Virginia Zoo. Does anyone have a line on a place to acquire them?

I can usually find a few when I visit RI. PM if a serious request. It'll give me an excuse to get wet finally.

Hi Mike: When do think that you'll be returning to RI? The Virginia Zoo is setting up an exhibit of European newts and was looking for small European fishes. However, they don't have any aquarists on staff.

Newts + sticklebacks is a disaster waiting to happen. I would strongly encourage the zookeepers to rethink this combination.

Wait - the Virginia Zoo in Norfolk Virginia (I notice you are in Wisconsin)?

If so, it shouldn't be necessary to go to RI to get these. They are right out the door. Someone at VIMS can probably easily help. If not, I can go netting when they are ready for them. PM me if needed.

I agree they should be available locally.
I start my RI trips in September and go till Nov 1, mostly weekends unless I'm on call plus a vaca day here and there..

If the newts are small enough a stickleback would glady eat one.

I'm curious what sp. of newt they are planning on using. I don't think it is a wise idea but it may work.

I could see the sticklebacks injuring the newts if they breed and become protective. If they are keeping crested newts their is also the possibility of one of them attempting to eat a stickleback and choking on the spines.

Sticklebacks are known for aggression and nippiness towards all-comers. Besides causing undue stress to the newts, this could also be fatal to the sticklebacks, thanks to the potent skin toxins produced by many newts. As donkeyman and critterguy noted, there is also the possibility of an adult of one species eating a smaller juvenile of the other species, which would likely be fatal to both parties.
