Hello everyone!
Recently I致e decided to keeping fishes, I致e kept some tetras, Gouramis in the past but never had success as they only live in a couple of months, later I decided to research more on keeping fishes and fine out more about keeping fish and I wanted to try again but this time I wanted to keep north american native fish.
I知 not a official member of NANFA but maybe someday will register when I知 older..

I知 really interested in sunfish and darters and California native fish (well not all of the California natives)
and as well as shiners, particularly the "golden shiner"

I have an 50 gallon tank that currently home to my yellow-belly slider and texas cooter, I like to keep some fishes in their but I知 aware any fishes can become food if the turtle try to catch them.(I only have concerns for my yellow-belly slider since he the only one that interested in eating fishes, while my texas cooter seem to be strictly herbivorous)But I知 determine to keep the fishes alive rather than becoming food by simply creating a refuge for the fishes to hide away from the turtles.
I really would love to have the texas cichlid but I discovered that their aggressive and it make me worried when I put them with the turtles and the other fish I wanted to keep, the bluegills but I知 not sure I wanted to keep the bluegill, I really want a Texas native fish and a Florida native fish that can be compatible for the 50 gallon tank.

I also have a 10 gallon tank unused now but I知 not sure whether I want the tank to be another native fish tank or an tropical fish tank.
Is their any species of North American fish that can live in a 10 gallon tank?

I'll let other take a crack at other parts of this thread... but this is the easy part... yes, there are a lot of natives that would do well in a ten gallon tank... mudminnows come to mind... or sticklebacks... or blacknose dace... a flagfish trio... even some darters will do well in an appropriately set up 10 gallon... get a good book, read up on the fish and you will find there are cool natives for almost every situation.

Well that is a very tough question as you are in California... I would normally suggest that you go on-line and fine the "Fishes of {your state name here}" as many of them are very good and all of them have great information in them for getting to know your native fish. But California is a different situation all together and as I have no experience that far west, I have no recommendation. But you can always buy Peterson's Field Guide for Freshwater Fishes... this is a great handbook for use in the field and for getting basic information (like size, range, and basic habitat/biology), and it is not expensive. It will not give you everything you want, but it will give you a good introduciton to North American native fishes (and unlike the "fishes of..." books, Peterson's will be at B&N.

Hey,
if you live close to the coast there are some great saltwater fish you can keep in that small tank! You can recreate a little tidepool even, just watchout where you collect, many of california coastal animals are highly protected, . Talk to fish and game about where is legal, they are great. Also, if you live near LA, prepare to travel to get fish freshwater fish!
