I have been thinking about purchasing a waterproof point and shoot for future forays.
Anybody recommend anything highly over the variety I've seen online?

I use a SONY Sportspack Handycam SPK-HCD with a SONY Handycam HDR-CX7. Purchased both in Columbia, MO. We even rigged up a "tripod" for super duper steady recordings.

Sounds quite nice, got any shots viewable online?

I have an Olympus Stylus 850 SW (or something like that)--I've never carried it underwater, but it has been out in the rain, on the boat, skiing, in the hottub, etc., and it keeps taking great pictures.

i just got a Olympus Stylus Tough-8000. It can go underwater but its like 400 dollars. Great camera to, its so strong it can be dropped from 10 feet without breaking, of course I dont try.

I have an Olympus Stylus 850SW, also. I've had it a little over a year. I've put it underwater, carried it in my pocket while wading, dropped it, and taken pictures in a snowstorm. (Those weren't fish pictures.) I'm not a great photographer, but I've been happy with the picture quality. I thought I broke it recently, but it turned out to be a bad battery. The screen kept shutting off.

I've got an Olympus 1030 SW and I'm happy with it. It's been in the ocean and I've brought it wading lots of times with no trouble. When I hit the button it takes a picture. I think I paid around $400 for the camera and a bunch of goodies for it. Prices have probably dropped a bit since then as well.

The only two problems I have are fairly minor. The screen is hard to see in really bright situations, and there is no viewfinder to fall back on. I have trouble getting decent macro shots, but I'm also in the running for world's worst photographer. Other members on the site have mentioned some tricks they use to get them to properly focus for macro shots, and have had a lot more success than I have.

I have had my Olympus Stylus 1050 SW for almost a year now, and it takes pretty good pictures underwater. Unfortunately all the bodies of water i've been in have been pretty murky, but it also takes really good macro shots.

I recently purchased an Olympus Stylus 6000 for a recent trip. I was dreading spending the money for the outing but proved to be an amazing and completely worthwhile addition to the arsenal. No regrets here, you'll love one.

This one is water proof http://www.bhphotovi...tal_Camera.html

This one is water proof, shock proof, and cold proof http://www.bhphotovi...tal_Camera.html

Both probably being answers to Olympus competition. The first $250.00 Second $300.00

I am an olympus fan but must say the first one I think I would get over the Olympus, 250 instead of 400. But small point and shoots are more prone to being dropped than bigger DSLR cameras because of being so small and not much to hold on to. And that Black and orange color of the first one I really like. I bet the color of it makes it take better photos. (grin)

Eddited to say. I just went back to the B&H website. The Oly 8000 is 300 and has a 3.6 optical zoom which, grant it is all you need for fish photos, but, the Pentax cameras I noticed have a 5 times optical zoom. That is a nice far reaching zoom for a waterproof camera. But it seems the Oly 8000 is rated much higher in drop and water proofness and if you sit on it, it will keep ticking, or taking.

My 15 month old Olympus 850 SW did not survive 90 minutes of snorkeling in a slow river. Only 2 feet down max. $119 to fix.

After doing a bunch of research it looks like the Canon D10 is the best bet if you're looking for a strictly underwater-use camera. The Panasonic, and the Pentax Optio W60 (NOT the W80, w80 has worse still pic quality) are the best if you're looking for a camera to use underwater but also out of the water a lot as well.

I'll be ordering a W60, though I may wait a bit.

I have a cannon D10. I will post a few pictures soon and you can see the results. After doing my homework it seemed like the best choice for a tuff little field camera. Love the fact if I get it soaked when out fishing there is nothing to worry about. Plus washing it off after photo'ing whatever I find in the muck with dirty hands is great. It has both an aquarium and underwater setting. I'll post a couple of both.
