Alight. i prob know the answer to my own question but how can i prevent food from being sucked up into my filters? i over filter all my tanks so there is alot of circulation....so when i throw blood worms or blackworms in so many get sucked up into the filter...well that scares me....i hate shutting the filters off as well. so i think the solution is putting a foam filter insert over the filter intake...although that looks so crappy...but is that what people do?

I use foam prefilters and it still happens, if i over feed my fish.i started using a dixie cup the melt the cubes first them feed smaller amounts over several feedings.

I have the same problem. you can take some of the netting from an old net (or similar material) and cut it to the size of the filter and put it over it. if you cut it well and attach it well then it won't look too bad.

I agree. If you have the time, feed less but more often. This can even be in one sitting - like melt your bloodworms in a cup and splash some inthe tank is small amounts. Watch them go crazy, then do it again.
Otherwise, try putting the food right at the output of a filter. Hopefully it will get blown down into the tank, away from the intake.

I positioned my powerheads to more or less intercept the intake from the filter, it pushes the bloodworms/brine shrimp along fast enough to not get sucked up even when it circles back around. And I do one big feeding a day, very little gets sucked up from what I can tell when I rinse the filter every other week.

i use a feeding cone ...a small cone shaped piece of plastic with hole just large enough for the black worms or brine shrimp to fit through and my sunnies just pull out what they want ...works great

Anything else is merely treating the symptoms and not the cause...etc. I used prefilters for a while but found that when you reach into the tank to clean them you end up squeezing a ton of crap all around the tank anyway....and who wants to submerge a plastic bag to remove a filter intake when you can just feed less?
