I still have lots of questions about darters. So maybe ill ask them in here. I'm curious about the following darters. I would like to know their status', range, and any other info about them. Thanks

Bandfin
Tangerine
Gilt
Christmas
Pinewoods
Arrow
Niangua
Blueside
Candy (I know they are protected)
Speckled
Blotchside

Some I know are protected but wanted to know if anyone had experience with them. Thanks

Well, I can give you some info and I'm sure there are other's here that have a lot more knowledge than me.

1. Splendid Darter
This is a snubnose type darter (subgenus Ulocentra) that is restricted to the Barren arm of the Green River drainage in Kentucky and some of TN. It is a very colorful fish and locally abundant in that area. It isn't protected by law, though it does have a very small habitat so it is kind of a 'sensitive' species.

2. Niangua
This is a Federally threatened fish that is only found in Missouri. It has a low popluation and is found in the Niangua River.

3. TN Snubnose
Another Ulocentra that is common in the TN river drainage in VA and TN.

4. Arrow
There are 2 arrow darters, Cumberland Arrow and Kentucky Arrow. The Cumberland is found in the upper cumberland river drainage and the Kentucky is found in the upper Kentucky river drainage. They are colorful fish that live in smaller streams. They have a small population due to the extensive coal mining/timber in Eastern KY that has destroyed many suitable streams for them to live. However, I have read that some research shows the Cumberland to be beginning to make a comeback, aka number are increasing.

Correct me if I'm wrong about any of these or their status.

I strongly reccomend a copy of The American Darters or The Handbook of Darter. You can usually find a copy on Amazon for a decent price. I found a copy of American Darters for $40. Check amazon and other used book sellers.

Nice pics Tony. I must say, Greensides are usually kinda bland, but to catch and see one in breeding colors is pretty awesome. Variegates look better year round, but are awesome in breeding colors. I caught a HUGE 5+ inch Variegate in really early spring (March) and it was stunning.

I used to go for max species, but some don't keep so well, and some are, well, not so interesting.

Right now, I'm down to personal favorites:

Bluebreast
Orangefin
Orangethroat variants (thoroughbred, headwater)
Variegate (my last one died after over a year in the tank, time to get another)
Bloodfin
Frecklebelly
Rainbow
Banded
Fantail
Striped
Teardrop(???, still think it might be a barcheek)
And a couple of others that don't come readily to mind.

I particularly like the Bluebreast and Orangefin, very expressive, and they maintain some color year round. The frecklebelly is just plain weird. My first one sat on the bottom on occasion, the one I have now never touches bottom.

When it was in breeding colors, the large striped darter had bright white spots on it's pectoral fins. That was one of the few I actually saw in the water and chased down.

The larger Percina I've had, dusky and logperch, tended to be bullies. Don't think I'll get any more. Frecklebellies don't like each other, but otherwise are peaceful.

Caught some speckled in full breeding colors, just beautiful, but they never seem to live more than a couple of months in a tank. Same for emerald, very delicate, don't seem to do well in the tank. I don't try to keep either any more, no point in killing them.

Turned loose a huge greenside in June, thought it was a sculpin when I first netted it.

Like greensides, johnnies are pretty common where I am, but don't look like much. Don't think I've ever caught a greenside in full colors.

I loved the redline I had, another real character, but they just don't exist in my usual search areas. Time to push further south and east.

Down to one rainbow in the tank, it's been in there since a year ago spring.

Bumpylemon, you need to move to KY or TN. We be up to our eyeballs in darters down here. I have photos on My Darter Page

Here are the darters I have or have had:

Banded Darter (Etheostoma zonale)
Blackside Darter (Percina maculata)
Brown Darter (Etheostoma edwini)
Fantail Darter (Etheostoma fabellarae)
Iowa Darter (Etheostoma exile)
Johnny Darter (Etheostoma nigrum)
Least Darter (Etheostoma microperca)
Logperch (Percina caprodes)
Rainbow Darter (Etheostoma caeruleum)
Roanoke Darter (Percina roanoka)
Sawcheek Darter - Possibly - (Etheostoma serrifer)
Swamp Darter (Etheostoma fusiforme)

Not the longest list by any stretch of the imagination, but I've enjoyed keeping them all. Darters rock!

Brian
