HI there, am torn on whether this is a stonecat or a slender madtom, they were 2 inches or less found in riffles of the KAw River drainage in NE Kansas. Thanks for any help :smile2:

Looks to me like a stonecat. Does not have the tiny eyes of the critters I see in the middle Mississipi River.

that slight band of color behind the head tells me stonecat too. all the ones I have seen have that, although I do not know if slenders have that.

3 for stonecat

I think it is a slender madtom. The stonecats around here anyway don't have those dark edges on the fins.

:-k I thought the tail shape and the fin on the underside(hard to see in the photos) told me stonecat but the small size of individuals I saw told me slender. :-k

Let us see the horses mouth (catfish's teeth). Eyes large for a stonecat. Coloration from photographs not final say when fish blanched owing to stress.

My vote is for N. exilis. Surperficially they look very similar to N. flavus but this one looks different from any N. flavus I've seen.

I've caught both species and I would have to say that your fish looks like a Slender Madtom. I'm going on:

1.) Looks too "elongated" to be a Stonecat.

2.) Stonecats have a visible "overbite" that your fish does not appear to have.

3.) Slenders have dark fin edges. This is particularly visible on the dorsal fin of your fish.

keepnatives,

Thanks for posting the comparison on Wisconsin Fish ID. I didn't know that you could do that with that application!
