My 10 gallon "stream tank"(i call it that because the 5" air stone and filter cause decent turbulence) is getting a bit crowded so im upgrading soon to a 20 long I found on craigs list and am wondering what kind of power head yall would recommend. I want decent flow but not a tornado, I want a few spots in there where some of the fish can rest but would like a current in about 2/3's of the tank. Thanks for any help.

My Fish
4 OT Darters
3 Bluntnose Minnows
3 Red Shiners
3 Stonecats

In my 20 Long, I use the Marineland Maxi-Jet 600 (rated at 160 GPH). I think that that was perfect because it wasn't too slow for current-loving species and not too high for slow-flow species. It was used in combination with an Aquaclear 30.

Have you tried the Korallias with small species? I have a Korallia 4 in my biggest tank and I like it fine, but the openness of the frame would make me leary of trying it will small slender fish.

I don't have a copy, but if you purchase the AC CD from Tom Watson, we ran an article by Cliff Zoller on his version of the stream tank. It was early in the 90s, I think. Cliff didn't believe in Power Heads, which he said generated more heat than he wanted. So he reconfigured an old Whisper Powerfilter. He siliconed some plastic across the outflow tray, closing off about three fourths of it. Then he fashioned a small chute out of scrap plastic to silicon to the down-sized opening. By redirecting the filter outflow, he created a powerful jet of water that his local Michigan riffle fish really loved.

Thanks for all the replys and advice. I decided to go with the Maxi Jet 600 Power Head and am going to hook it up to a water return system similar to Lozgod's link (Thanks). I got it dry fitted and am prolly gonna leave it that way for easier cleaning but am still waiting for the powerhead to come in the mail. I figured this system would give me ideal water movement and added filtration and for 10 bucks or so in parts I thought I would give it a shot. Here it is without the powerhead, ill post more pics when the tank is complete.

Good thing you dry fitted the set up. You may need to cut the side pipes slightly more to allow room for the powerhead. You intake is pushed up directly against the back of the tank.
