i am hoping these guys are pygmy sunfish, but they kinda look like sheepshead minnows, i was looking for a definitive id. i caught them in osprey florida south of sarasota. they are pretty tiny now but i think the pics show off their major details

Will is right, those are definitely sheepshead minnows. You will have to go a little farther inland to get pygmies.

do pygmys prefere ponds and lakes, or streams and creeks?

Still water + lots of vegetation = pygmy heaven. At least in TN, E. zonatum is usually in marshes, swamps, ditches, or backwaters associated with floodplains of streams or rivers, but not in the stream channels.
