Well I will be moving to a new apartment September 19th. The cichlids I had in my 55 gallon I gave to my brother to keep. I plan to make the 55 gallon a native tank. As iof right now the tank is half full with only a giant danio and my pleco my brother did not want. i took out the bio wheels and threw them in the water to keep wet. Wehn i re setup the tank. How long does it take to cycle with a seeded filter and gravel? and will i be ok to house 5 redbreasted sunfish?

As long as the water is dechlorinated I would say it is cycled with the gravel and bio-wheel. You should be good with 5 sunfish.

I think it has been amply demonstrated that moving the filter intact results in no detectable cycle. I've done it several times myself. By way of comparison, I would only expect cycle time to be about 4-6 days if you took an old filter pad, rubbed it on a new one, and stuck the new one in a brand new filter.

I'd fill the tank up the rest of the way and keep the filter running until moving day. You won't have to re-cycle at all.

sounds good. So on day of moving it will be safe to transfer the sunnies over to the bigger tank? man are they gonna love going from a 20L to a 55. btw what would be good tankmates with them? i'd like to add others if possible.

I should add, don't want to assume, keep the filter media wet during the move. Put it in a bucket or something. If it dries out you will lose a lot of bacteria. Same with the gravel, although it isn't as important as the filter.

Madtoms go well with sunfish. I have a grass pickerel and a stonecat with a longear sunfish right now, they all pretty much ignore each other. I'm sure other folks will have some more suggestions.

Well. its been a week since the move! everything is going great. The fish love the new tank and I think its awesome. I invested the 'Python' and man should I have done that a long time ago! the only thing that sucks is no tv or internet until this saturday!. hope all is well with everyone!
