The September 4 issue of the journal Science has a Perspectives article entitled "Threats to Freshwater Fish" by Anne Magurran of the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. It's a short review, and many readers of the Forum will be familiar with her basic premise. But she suggests that gaining insights into how small, isolated populations of fish can survive over long periods of time will help with the conservation of these species as we humans continue to mash up their habitats. She uses the Picote de Tequila, a Mexican livebearer, as an example of a species in trouble. Here's a .pdf of the article:
