I've seen very few hard numbers released from this event, and what I have seen does not indicate a HUGE kill. Don't get me wrong, I'm the one that usually has to go out and assess these types of things, so I'm the last one that wants to see this news. I'd like to see some facts and accurate numbers. All I see is histeria on message boards and speculation.

That area had a big kill back in the late 1950s, early 1960s sometime due to mine drainage.

Might be the same this time around but the fish recovered from the spills.

There is only a few miles of stream in the Pennsylvania section (aside from the headwaters) that is suitable for fish.

I did find this:

Another news article said "hundreds" of fish. I can not seem to find the EPA report, though.

The pictures I saw showed dead muskies and flathead cats among other species and scores of fish in tributaries

I'm glad somebody got around to posting this, since I've been too busy to keep up with the forum for a while, and then too overwhelmed with how far behind I am to read all the posts I've missed! Anyway, Dunkard Creek is not far south of me, about 1.5 to 2 hours, and I have been planning on sampling this stream for some time now. I occasionally work nearby, and even thought I'd sample the stream after work one day before heading home. I had several possible stream access points mapped out, and it was just a matter of getting down there, when I learned of this fish kill. Ugh! What a disaster! Oh well, I guess I'll just stay out of the way of those who are studying the problem now, and maybe check it out next year. Let's just hope that Matt is right, that it maybe isn't all that bad!
