They are actually 16 3/8" pin to pin. What gets me is nobody makes them in a spectrum suitable for freshwater plants. Theres T5HO plant bulbs in all other lengths. What is really weird is that its the only format that will fit a standard 10 gallon tank, wich has got to be the worlds most popular size tank.

H.O. is really overkill for a 10 gallon. You would do as well to use standard fluorescent or C.F.

I get great plant growth in 10 gallon tanks with two home improvement store bought standard "daylight" compact fluorescents. You don't need the fancy stuff for a shallow tank like that. When the light has to go through a couple feet of water, then the more powerful lights make sense.

You guys are right, I didn't really need a dual T5HO. I do the home depot rigged lighting on most of my tanks, but the main requirment on the 10g was purely aesthetic- It needed to look tidy and neat ( plus dual lighting to cover more of the spectrum). If anyone knows of a dual 18" T8, please hook me up.

Have you spoken with anyone at a real electrical supply store? There is an amazing array of bulbs out there, most not labeled well for the casual consumer. But such a store may be able to think of just the thing. If you have one, it might be easier to discuss in person than over the phone, since they can pull out their books, etc.
