This is a small specimen (about 3") and I'm sure I've never caught one of these before.
What is it?

Looks more like a Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus)than the comparable Mozambique tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus).
On young ones, like the one you have, you can see that hint of a spot 3/4 of the way down the dorsal fin, which should confirm Nile tilapia.

color looks odd so i all so would say its a hybrid tilapia.
Uland can you give a little more detail on were it was from?
i wonder if its a katrina released fish if so they have survived the cold winter waters and may be breeding.
body shape would suggest selective breeding for a large filet.
plus it has dark vertical stripes present in the caudal fin like a Nile tilapia.

I am starting to come across tilapia in the escatawba river. where did you catch this?
Harry,
I forgot my Alabama maps and I think it's Eslava creek? Second creek you cross on Govt' blvd heading east from I-65.
Thanks all, we figured it was some Tilapia but weren't sure which one.
Also Harry, if you can, let the DNR know where you're finding them. Apparently they are a bit surprised by the Tilapia expansion.

What else did you find there?
Did did you wear a bullet proof vest.
Ha! Yeah, that's the spot
We caught many golden topminnows, bluegill, redspotted sunfish, warmouth, gambusia, golden shiner and chubsucker (creek?). A few inland silversides and fat sleeper, a lone yellow bullhead and almost landed a large spotted gar. Saw other spotted gar and many Tilapia which appear to associate (form raoming groups) with other Tilapia unlike sunfish.
We only seined a short stretch of creek since I called after meeting with my customers and David had a few minutes to drag a seine.
