Caught in brackish water off the James River near the mouth of the Chesapeake:

He's about two inches long.

Looks like a young Mangrove snapper to me. That bar through the eye and coloration is common on small young ones.

I agree. It's a juvenile gray (AKA mangrove) snapper, Lutjanus griseus.

Wow--Thanks folks! I had heard people have been seeing tropical fish up this way with the warming temperatures.
