Yes,
We use the custom made partions as shown with 75-gal glass aquariums. Made from same poly-carbonate plastic used to make greenhouses. Material cut with jigsaw or band saw. Wholes cut with wholesaw powered by a drill.
The hole size can very important. With some arrangments larger holes can allow passage of some fishes (females for us) but deny larger males, therefore partion is semi-permeable. We use these with larger bluegill and redear. Similar arrangement with warmouth, green sunfish or longears uses smaller holes. Can also make holes small enough to deny females but still enables interaction (pheromones, tactile and visual displays). Some species do not do well with rough openings.

I sometimes use pond filter material (the kind that comes in a 4' wide roll) for tank partitions. It is stiff enough to stay in place when cut just slightly overlarge.

The egg crate, like the material we use can cause damage whe fish are flighty. What type of fish(es) will be separated?

Plastic canvas (from the crafts department, used for needlepoint) also works well if you make a little frame for the sides. It also works for smaller fish and is softer than egg crate.

I use this stuff instead of the wire mesh that comes with the tank dividers. I like it better.
