I would second that. But are they the Eastern Banded Killie (Fundulus diaphanus diaphanus) or the Western Banded Killie (Fundulus diaphanus menona)? I haven't learned how to tell the 2 apart yet.

There are only F. d. diaphanus in VA.

OK. How do you tell them apart? We have Western Banded Killies here in Wisconsin, but I wouldn't know how to tell them from an Eastern if I saw one.

The westerns have fewer bands on their side and they also have a different average dorsal ray count. Don't remember the exact numbers but I think you could look them up pretty easily.

I checked my Peterson's guide and it says that the Westerns have many brown spots on the back and upper side of the fish, whereas the Easterns don't. It also says that Westerns have less lateral line scales and less pectoral rays. Here's the breakdown:

Western -- Eastern
40-44 lateral scales -- 45-49 lateral scales
14-15 pectoral rays -- 16-17 pectoral rays
spots on back -- no spots on back

Still, pictures would help, so here are pictures of some of my Westerns.

That's a breeder male.

Here's a picture of a female breeder in among some plants.

By the way, does anyone know how to make HTML tables on this forum? I tried and couldn't get it to work. I also checked the "help" and couldn't find anything.
