I haven't been on the forum for a long time, but remember reading about use of tranquilizers or some other drug that's given to fish after collecting to keep the fish calm while transporting them back home. Can someone point me to information on such a drug? Thanks!

I'm not sure I've heard of people using anything like this for transportation after collecting but I know that tropical guys calm very large and/or dangerous fish with MS222 (finquel) or clove oil (Eugenol) for transportation/surgery. Caution though as both are used to euthanize fish so very careful dosing would be needed. I know that some guys use "bag buddies" for shipping fish which smell of cloves.

I use Bag Buddies from jungle labs. The tablets have a fish calmer in it and it also removes chlorine, metals, etc... I bought a jar of 400 tablets. They seem to have been beneficial while collecting this summer, I lost less fish.

if your looking for finquel, goto Drs Foster/Smith...they carry it.

Isoflurane (never used it), MS-222 (Tricaine Methanesulfonate) (I think ~20mg to .1L H20---watch pH, MS-222 is acidic), or Clove Oil (.5ml/3L water. Dissolve the .5ml in a little ethanol first).

Don't overdose your fish or they will die...and don't up the dose for big minnows; it is my experience that big fish succumb to MS-222 faster than little ones.

Unless you're transporting big fish, jumpy fish, or a lot of fish--it's not really necessary.
