A few months ago some of my tanks started getting mildew on the surface of the water. It starts out as little white flecks and eventually grows in the a white mat that covers much of the water's surface. It doesn't seem to negatively affect the inhabitants of the tank, but is unsightly and I'd like to get rid of it. It has moved around to various tanks and was likely transmitted by using the same siphon on different tanks. Anyone know how to get rid of it? The only way I know how to now is to bleach the tanks.

You know, I've seen something similar on my non-filtered plant tanks. It didn't cover the entire surface like you describe, but did start as little white flecks that grew. Never did figure out what it was, assumed it was bacterial. I threw in a few airstones to disturb the surface for a while and it went away.

It's probably fungus and bacteria growing on the scum left by oils and proteins in the food. Do you know the old paper towel trick? Lay a paper towel on the water surface, wall-to-wall at one end, pull it across the surface and up over the rim at the other end. Most of the scum will stick to the paper. Repeat with another towel if the first one doesnt get it all. Have a container ready to drop the scum-soaked towels into.
