I went to set a minnow trap today. Something I did about 8 times before. I never had much luck trapping the local streams, i got 4 fish total before today and never more than 2 at once.

Instead of a stream I decided to trap a small marshy pond in my town. I heard it had sunfish and bullhead, and when i was a kid I made a stupid mistake of putting crappie in it (not sure if they survived or not). Last time I fished it small fish kept stealing my bait but i didn't think i'd have much luck with a minnow trap.

Boy was I wrong! I caught 44 golden shiners in 8 hours. Now I have a dilemma. What do I do with an aerated bucket holding 44 golden shiners?

I ended up giving them to a bait shop. that pond however ended up being the best minnow trapping place i found and i will go back for bait. It's all goldens however (not counting the occasional bullhead or pumpkinseed who strays into the trap) so i haven't got anything cool for my tank. )ok, I grabbed two bullheads, i wish i had a tank for the pumpinseeds but they'd likely be too agressive).

Not keep them all if you don't have any way to care for them other than an aerated bucket? C&R can be practiced with natives too...

I hope you didn't "Give" 'em to the bait shop!!!!
They're like $4.00 a dozen these days!

And if you do try trapping in that pond again a pumkimseed is not a very aggresive fish. I have a 5" one watching me now in a 75 gallon. I have never had any problems with him being aggresive to any array of fish that have been in that aquarium. Except the feeder fish.

That might be an unusual individual. I have kept many P-seeds, big and small, males, females, species only, mixed groups, communities etc. If I were to use one word to describe their temperament, it'd be "Deadly". The victims are mostly sunfish and especially other P-seeds but they get pretty bossy even with big minnows.
Given a chance, a male P-seed will flat out kill another male sunfish if there's not enough room/cover for it to escape. The females are even mean.

I guess the reason the pumkimseed may not be aggresive is he comes from a large pond in the middle of a small town where children often toss bread to the fish. When i caught him I thought the fish where almost tame! I know every time I go there I always see the sunfish waiting for the kids when they get out of school. That pond never has dissapionted me, producing large fat sunfish! My thanks to the children that keep them fat and happyPosted Image!
