To catch fish to move them i removed a few objects from my tank, one of them was a fake rock from a two rock set. I returned it later.

oddly enough that rock developed a new and strangely pretty algea on it with a pinkish red color. Hopefull this new algea will stay benign and not try and take over like other kinds do (yeah, like that would happen). Right now the little tufts of it makes the fake rock resemble saltwater liverock.

I've never seen a pink algae in fresh water. Are you sure it's not a sponge?

I'd guess its the "red beard" or "black beard" algae Audouinella. It can look pinkish to blue-greenish to nearly black. It also turns pink when you kill it (chlorophyll destroyed, exposing its red pigment). It is technically a red algae (rhodophyta).

I have a lot of pink 'something' that is growing on the plain river rocks in my stream tank... looks somewhat like coraline algae... I assumed that it was somewhat normal...

I get something similar. It looks like hardspot algae on the glass but it's red. We also get red mildew in the shower so I figured it was just a water thing.

This must be the dreaded Pink Algae of Death - I have heard about it but never seen it personally. Let us know how it ends.

I have, and this species is higly volatile, often using its bright coloring to confuse fish into eating it, causing the fish to die. :fishy:
