From Peter Unmack, our gracious host for the 2010 convention:

When: mid October 2010 (weekend of 16-17th)

Where: Nevada. Main activities will be in Ash Meadows and the Death
Valley system, incorporating efforts to do some conservation work at Ash
Meadows (exotic removal mostly) as well as guided tours of fish habitats
in the area. For keener souls there will be an extended additional 2 day
trip to visit various springfish habitats in Railroad Valley (Crenichthys
nevadae) and various warms springs in the White River, Pahranagat Valley
and Moapa River (Crenichthys baileyi and other native fishes). There will
also be some presentations on desert fishes of the region.

Notice: All native fishes in this region are protected, either under the Federal
Endangered Species Act or state protected. There will be some supervised
opportunities to see these rare fishes up close that is otherwise
unavailable to the general public. Folks will also be able to snorkel in
some warm springs containing Crenichthys.

This is gonna be the first convention we've ever had west of the Mississippi. The desert Southwest - what a great opportunity! And there is no one better qualified to play host.

Guys! The convention was in Texas just last year... 2008 anyway!

Duh! I was thinking west of the Rockies but writing west of the Mississippi.

I am glad to see a soutwestern convention. I talked to NANFA members before and many have told me they doubted their would ever be conferences in the south west, pacific coast, or north east due to a lack of fish, interest, and people willing to attend. This Nevada convention gives me hope that one day their will be a north eastern one.

As for fish not being collectable does this mean all fish in nevada or just the ones in the area the trip is going to?

I looked around on natureserve and found some interesting fish in nevada. I searched google for pictures of them.

lahontan redside (very impressive)

speckled dace (looks like a bleached longnose with a shorter nose)

cui-ui (great name for a fish)

redside shiner (like a less colorful lahontan)

desert pupfish (ooh, blue)

devils hole pupfish (cute, sort of like a fat, round, ultra compact killi.)

May I be the first to say that it would be awesome to see some of those Lahontan Redsides brought back (if possible) for someone to try and breed? Perhaps get this species established in captivity? Anyone?

Just a thought, if they aren't protected. I vaguely remember hearing that they were one of the more common fish species on the East slope of the Sierras. I lived out there the first 16 years of my life, but unfortunately never got to see a lot of these fish in the flesh.

They're interesting natives in Nevada. But on FirstChaos' list at least two of them are federally listed as Endangered, the cui-ui and devil's hole pupfish. And probably the entire native fauna, all 40 species or so, would benefit by that level of protection as the result of habitat alteration. But it is good that Peter the Unmack is willing and able to host a convention there.

You never know what you're going to find, or where you're going to find it. So keep looking.

Thanksgiving!

And i am thankful for getting to experience the desert and springs of Nevada.
Peter was a fine host and many of us spent a week at Ash Meadows and running up the eastern edge of the state snorkeling various springs, some hot, some cold and some just right... and all with desert fish and a few foreigners.

I have created a blog site that has over 175 pics. Quite an undertaking and i think i spent more time creating it than actually being there. Its far too extensive for the forum's limitations but i will provide the link.

Be aware it is from a personal perspective and very long. Pull up a chair and drink for an extended visit.

It is worth the time you will spend. Casper captured the essence of the trip.

Ranger Bob and Betsy made this neat little video of the Ash Meadows Amargosa Pupfish.
Nice complimentary music. Mesmerizing Sand boil. Predatory Crawdad. Frolicking Iridescent Pupfish.

Great trip.

I think the critter on that rusty plate that was labled as a beetle was a giant water bug.
